What: 17th Annual Showcase of the South
The annual Showcase of the South began in 1993 as a one-time event.  Attendees were asked to bring a canned good for a ticket.  In the clubhouse of a small apartment complex, artists displayed their talents to a modest, but enthusiastic crowd.  The first show was a modest success but it wasn’t done for personal profit, it was done for the benefit of the artists and the community.  The Showcase has since grown to become one of the largest annual musical events in the Southeast.  The historic Rialto Center for the Arts in downtown Atlanta, a roughly 1,000 seat performing-arts venue, is routinely sold out each year for the Showcase of the South.  The showcase includes two shows, a day show, which caters to young children (2-16 yr olds) as well as  the church going crowd, and a night show, which caters to the more mature crowd (18-34 yr olds).  Both shows are comprised of talent from varying musical backgrounds; gospel, R&B, rap, and pop.  Taylord Entertainment holds auditions for this showcase around the southeast region with stops in Memphis, Jacksonville, Savannah, Charlotte, and Columbus.  Acts are chosen by major label A&Rs that judge at each audition site.  A-list talent that has graced the stage at the annual event includes B5, Jagged Edge, and India Arie.  What makes the Showcase of the South different from just about every other musical event in Atlanta is that the showcase is treated more as a production.  Professionally trained staff engineers the sound, manage the backstage area, as well as usher guests into the theater.
